Explanation
城壁で囲まれたオールド・バガンの南側城壁に開いた道路の南東にある西正面の寺院。北回廊外壁の西端、北西隅の近くの壁画。2弟子を伴う仏坐像が回廊外壁を一周している。ただ、本図に向かって左側に禅定印、右側には転法輪印、その右側に触地印と異なる印相の仏坐像が並ぶ。各仏坐像の頭上には樹木が描かれ、恐らく過去仏を表すものと思われる。下部には正方形の区画が多数並び、恐らくジャータカが描かれているものと思われる。当寺院は、バガン遺跡の中でも最初期のものと考えられている。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』p.19／両脇に弟子を従えた仏陀坐像／右手施無畏印、左手与願印の仏陀坐像■ミンピャ寺院の回廊外壁上層に描かれている一連の仏陀像の中の1体である。ミンピャ寺院は、パガン城南壁の外側、パトーダーミャー寺院の南約400mの地点にある大型の寺院である。方形の基壇三層の上に覆鉢と螺旋状の尖塔を載せているところから、一見、仏塔であるような印象を与えるが、基層には各面に格子状の明り窓が付いているし、西側には小さいながらも向拝が設けられている。内部は長大な方形の回廊になっており、回廊内壁の各面に更に奥に通じる小さな通路がひとつずつある。仏陀塑像はその奥に、四方を向いて1体ずつ安置されている。壁画は、回廊の内外両壁面に見られる。内壁には舎利塔と蓮華とが交互に描かれ、外壁には本生話の大きなパネルが三層にわたって描かれている。一層あたりのパネルの数は、南北両パネルが44枚ずつ、西壁は42枚、東壁は36枚、計166枚である。従ってパネルの総数は三層合せて498枚となる。この本生図の上に、仏陀坐像が横一列に描かれている。いずれも両脇に合掌した仏弟子2人を伴った坐像だが、印契は説法印、触地印、禅定印、施無畏印、与願印とまちまちである。従ってこれらの仏陀像は過去二十八仏というよりは様々な経を説く釈尊像であるという解釈も成り立つ。仏陀の顔容は例外なく円顔で、眼は上瞼の中央が垂れ下がった半眼で、眉毛は細い。肉髻は先端が鋭く尖った屹立型で、耳朶は肩先に触れんばかりに長い。仏陀像の上層には雲にのる飛天の姿が見られる。
