酔象調伏図（ローカテイパン（No.1580））
Explanation
城壁で囲まれたオールド・バガンの南東、シュエサンドー・パゴダ（No.1568）へと延びる道の途中にある。北を正面とする寺院の主室南壁東側上部、塑像の触地印仏坐像の右側に位置する壁画。王舎城で仏敵デーヴァダッタが象を暴れさせ、釈迦を殺そうとするが、釈迦の威力によりその象がおとなしくなる場面で、本図は釈迦八相図の一つとして描かれている。本図の下には初転法輪図、さらにその下には獼猴奉蜜図がある。立っている釈迦の足元に跪く象が表現される。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.33／酔象調伏／ローカテイパン寺院の酔象調伏図■祠堂奥(南)の釈尊塑像の背後壁面の左上に描かれている。釈尊の円味のある顔、俯いてはいるが切れ長の大きな眼、長い耳朶、肩から腕にかけての豊かな肉付き、すらりとした体?などが目立つ。後光は挙身光ではなく、頭の後を輪型に囲んだだけの円光である。
