Explanation
城壁で囲まれたオールド・バガンの南東、シュエサンドー・パゴダ（No.1568）へと延びる道の途中にある。北を正面とする寺院の主室西壁南側上部。壁面全体で14列にわたり描かれているジャータカ図のうち、上から3列目、スタソーマ・ジャータカ（第537話）の一場面。壁画の下にはその内容を記した古ビルマ語の墨書がある。バガン遺跡では、絵巻のように横に物語の展開が描かれている壁画は珍しく貴重である。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.41／ジャータカ第537話大須陀須摩本生／ジャータカ第537話大須陀須摩本生■ローカテイパン寺院の祠堂西壁、上から三層目の左端の画である。前世において夜叉であったために人肉を喰う悪習を棄てきれぬ王が、そのために国を追われ森に隠れ棲んで旅人を餌食にする。ある時青年時代に友であり師であった1人の王を捕えるが､婆羅門となったら必ず帰ってくるとの約束で釈放する。約束どおりその王は戻ってくるがその誠実さをほめ讃えた食人鬼は四つの望みをかなえてやると申し出て、食人の悪癖を棄てるよう望まれ遂に承諾し国に帰るという物語である。写真は、画面下のビルマ語墨文によると、菩薩が須陀須摩であった時ベナレスの国王ブラフマダッタが榕樹の枝に王子達を吊り下げている場面を表す。
