Explanation
城壁で囲まれたオールド・バガンの南、ミィンカバー村を過ぎて、さらに少し南に下った先にある北正面の寺院。主室の南回廊内壁中央上部の壁画。釈迦の成道を邪魔する悪魔マーラの軍勢が中央に向かって進軍する様子を描いている。本図は獅子に乗ったマーラ。反対側には中央を振り返り退散するマーラの軍勢が描かれている。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.38／魔羅の来襲／魔羅の来襲と退散■魔羅の描き方は寺院によってかならずしも同じではないが、共通するのは、ぎょろりとしたどんぐり眼、肉厚の大きな鼻、唇の両端から覗いている牙、もじゃもじゃした髭面、二臂または四臂あるいは六臂の太い腕、手にもつ剣や楯その他の武器などである。また、来襲場面にしろ退散場面にしろ、何らかの動物の背にまたがっている。動物は、寺院によって、 虎であったり、獅子であったり、牛であったりする。
