Explanation
バガンの南部、ミィンカバー村の南方、アベーヤダナー寺院（No.1202）の南東にある北正面の寺院。主室の南回廊内壁東側上部の壁画。釈迦の成道を邪魔する悪魔マーラの軍勢が中央に向かって進軍する様子を描いている。本図は水牛に乗り右手に盾、左手に剣を持ったマーラ。他にも獣の頭を持ったマーラ、象や虎に乗ったマーラなどがいる。反対側には中央を振り返り退散するマーラの軍勢が描かれている。他の寺院では、向かって左側が進撃するマーラ、右側が退散するマーラとなるが、当寺院は逆となっている点が珍しい。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.39／魔羅の退散／魔羅の来襲と退散■ナガヨン寺院は、11世紀の後半チャンシッター王によって建立された寺院で、ミンカバー村からティーリピッサヤ村すなわち南の方へと向う自動車道路の東側､アベーヤダナー寺院とは道を隔てて南東約90mの地点にある。この寺院は前室(礼拝堂)とその南側にある祠堂とから成っているが、祠堂には中央にコの字型の支柱があり外壁との間で回廊を形成している。そのコの字型支柱の内部には文隣陀龍王に保護された右手施無畏印、左手与願印の巨大な釈尊立像が祀られている。壁画は回廊の内外両壁に描かれている。東回廊外壁は壁面の?落が甚だしい。描かれているのは、内壁上部が長部、中部経典の場面、外壁上部は小部経典の場面で、いずれも触地印または説法印の釈尊坐像で表されている。内壁の下部は小パネル群による本生図になっている。魔羅の来襲図は南回廊内壁の本生図の上部に描かれている。他の寺院の来襲図とは異なり、壁面の右(東)側が来襲、左(西)側は退散となっている。
