Explanation
城壁で囲まれたオールド・バガンの内部、城壁南側の近く、タッビィンニュ（No.1597）から伸びる道の先にある東正面の寺院。恐らく主室回廊内壁の壁画。下半身が写っていないが、姿態や偏袒右肩であること等から触地印坐像と思われる。回廊の内壁には、触地印や転法輪印の仏坐像が複数描かれ、その中には舎衛城神変図を示す中央の転法輪印仏坐像に背を向けて化現された仏陀を描くものがあるため、本図も仏伝中の成道図である可能性が高い。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.6／釈尊の顔容／釈尊の顔容■パトーダーミャー寺院の壁面に描かれた正面向き釈尊像の顔の部分である。この寺院は、パガン城南壁の内側、タッピンニュ寺院の真西、ヒンズー教寺院として名高いナッフラウン・チャウンの、更に西にある基壇一層の寺院で、11世紀の後半ソールー王によって建立されたと考えられている。寺院の内部は東西に分れ、東側が前室、西側は奥室(祠堂)になっている。奥室にはシカーラを支えるコの字形の柱があり、その柱と外壁とで回廊が形作られている。その回廊内外両壁には成道を中心とする仏伝が描かれている。仏伝はすべて大型パネルの中に描かれているが、これらのパネルは外壁の各面に6枚ずつ、内壁では東西に6枚、南北に8枚ずつある。壁画には内容を示す古代モン語の墨文が記されているが、 磨滅して判読できない箇所も少なくない。写真は釈尊画像の顔であるが、ローカティパン寺院の釈尊像とは異なりやや長顔。眉毛は細く、半眼に見開いた眼はどことなく鋭い。注目を引くのは屹立した肉髻と肩に届かんばかりの長い耳朶、アラビア数字の3を下向きにしたような格好の額の生え際などであろう。この寺院の人物像は、釈尊像も含めて、皆鼻が高く、鋭い目つきを特徴としている。
