Explanation
バガンの内陸部、ミンナントゥー村の北側、タンブーラ寺院（No.482）の道を挟んで反対側に少し入ったところにある東正面の寺院。主室の北回廊突出部東壁の壁画。中央に転法輪印仏坐像、その右側に正面を向いた仏立像、左側に顔が中央を向いた仏立像が描かれている。身体から焔を発しているように見えることから舎衛城神変における双神変にも見えるが、同様の構図の壁画が堂内に複数確認できることから、場面の同定は難しい。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.7／説法印の釈尊坐像／タヨウピェー寺院の転法輪坐像■寺院番号539/295(a)というこの寺院は、ミンナントゥー村の近くにある寺院群の中では最大の寺院である。ミンナントゥー村からは北に向って二本の牛車道が伸びている。東側の道路沿いにはレーミェンナー、パヤートンズー、タンブーラ、ナンダミンニャといった諸寺院が並ぶ。それに対し西側の道路には、ソーフラウン、ミンワイン、マラービッ、マロンビッといった寺院が点在する タヨウピェー寺院は、ミンワイン寺院とは牛車道を隔てた東側にある。寺院内部の壁画は、色彩こそ薄れてはいるものの、仏伝と過去二十八仏の像で、画の下には内容を説明した墨文が残っている。写真はその中の転法輪坐像で、仏陀は両蹠を上向きに結跏趺坐し両手を胸の前に挙げて説法印を結んでいる。顔の輪郭はどちらかと言えばローカテイパンの円顔に近いが、耳朶は先端が肩先に触れる程に長い。眼を半眼に開いている事や糸のように細長い眉毛などは他の寺院の仏陀像と変りない。変っているのは額の生え際と肉髻である。額の生え際が連弧状を呈しているのは螺髪を示すためであろうか。肉髻は頭の中央部がいくらか盛り上がっていてそこだけ髪毛を欠く事で表されている。仏陀の体の左右から火炎と波模様とが吹き出している事から考えると、この像は舎衛城での双神通を示すものと思われる。尚、蹠にはかすかながら千幅輪相が見える。
