Explanation
バガンの内陸部、ミンナントゥー村の北側にあるナンダミィンニャー寺院の南突出部南壁東側の壁画。寺院は東を正面とする。窓を挟んで西側には男女抱擁図がある。鬼面キールティムカの上に立ち、菩薩のような姿をしている。観音であれば阿弥陀の化仏、弥勒であれば仏塔がシンボルとなるが、特定の菩薩を示す特徴を有していないため、護法神と考えられる。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.17／明り窓の横に描かれた守護神／ナンダミンニャ寺院明り窓横の守護神■南窓の左に描かれている。鋸歯状の突起が付いた冠を頭に戴き、髪を塔状に高く編み上げ、幅広の首飾り、腕飾り、足飾りなどの装身具を身に付け、腰回りを覆う半ズボン状の腰布と脛の中程迄達する透薄の下衣をまとっている。菩薩である事は明らかだが、武器は持っていない。植物(蓮)の茎を手にしているところから考えると蓮華手菩薩である可能性が考えられる。他の寺院の菩薩と違う点は、耳朶は釈尊像のように長いが耳飾りを付けていない事である。立像ではあるが、直立しているのではなく腰をいくらかひねっている。こうした立ち方はアベーヤダナー寺院の菩薩の場合も同じである。なお、片手は胸の前に挙げ指を伸して掌を外向けにしている。施無畏の印を結んでいるものと思われる。
