『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.193／本生譚の一場面、九万六千羽の家来を従えたハンサの王／ティローカグル窟院の本生図■ティローカグル窟院は、ザガイン市の北方にイラワジ河沿いに南北に連なる低い丘陵の一角にある。西向きの崖をくり抜いて作られた洞窟である。ニャウンヤン王朝のナラワラ王によって、1672年に造られたと言われる。内部には、カタカナの「口｣の字型の回廊があり、東回廊と南回廊の左右壁面に壁画が描かれている。壁面は上下四層に仕切られ、最上層には袈裟を偏袒右肩にまとい右手を触地印に結んだ過去二十八仏が描かれている。各層の画の下に記されているビルマ語の墨文によると中層の画は仏伝と本生譚、最下層は地獄図である。本生譚(ジャータカ)は、一図一景のパガン形式とは異なり、横長の帯状パネルの中に物語を展開させる絵様帯形式をとっている。そのため547話のすべてを網羅する事は到底不可能で、せいぜい第504話バッラディーヤ本生、第506話チャンペッヤ本生、第516話大猿本生、第527話ウンマダンディー女本生などの数話が取り上げられているだけである。写真は9万6千羽の家来を従える鵝鳥(ハンサ)の王を示す。
