バガンの東部、ニャウンウー村のさらに東、エーヤーワディー川を見下ろす小高い丘の上にある東正面の寺院。主室の北突出部東壁の壁画。母マーヤー夫人の右脇の下から誕生したシッダッタ太子を天人たちが受け止める場面。壁画の下には場面を説明した古ビルマ語の墨書があり、「これは菩薩を梵天が手で受け取り、四天王が豹皮で受け止めた」とある。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.36／四天王が支える降誕直後の悉達多太子／降誕直後の悉達多太子を4人の天人が豹の皮で支えている場面■テッチャムニ寺院の仏伝図パネルの1枚である。この寺院は13世紀初頭に建立された基壇三層の寺院で、屋上に北インド型の四面体のシカーラと螺旋状の頂華とを載せている。四方に向拝をもつのもこの寺院の特徴である。写真の太子は頭髪を塔状に高く結い上げ、頭飾りや腕環を付け、腰回りを覆うだけの短い下衣をまとっている。この下衣のつけ方は地上に跪いた4人の天人の場合も、雲に乗って飛翔する2人の飛天(または乾達婆)の場合も同じである。
