『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.188／浄飯王の種蒔き儀礼／浄飯王の耕耘儀礼図■マハームニ寺院はマンダレー市の南西、マンダレーからアマラプーラ町へと通じる自動車道路の傍にある。ボードーパヤー王の治世、アラカン遠征に向ったビルマ軍が戦利品として持ち帰った仏像を祀るため1785年に建立された寺院である。四方に向拝をもつこの寺院が1883年に火災で消失したため、1898年に新しい参道が再建された。参道両壁面に残る壁画はこの時描かれたものである。19世紀末の作品であるが、画法や画風にはコンバウン時代の特色が忠実に残っている。写真は浄飯王による耕耘儀礼の図で、王は二頭立ての牛に牽かせた犁で田を耕やしている。この情景は、コンバウン時代の王による農耕儀礼を再現したものと思われる。
