Explanation
バガンの南部、宿泊施設や飲食店などが並ぶニューバガンの北西、市街地からすぐ近くにある北正面の寺院。東壁の壁画。東西の壁面全体をそれぞれ横17×縦18の区画に分けて、1話1図でジャータカを描いている中に、それぞれ3つずつ仏伝図が挿入されている。本図はそのうち舎衛城神変図を描いたもの。中央の転法輪印仏坐像に背を向けて化現された仏陀を描くのは、東インドのパーラ朝で定型化されたスタイルである。下部左側に礼拝するビンビサーラ王、右側に敗北した外道が描かれている。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.27／／ティンガヤーザー寺院(番号437)の双神通■ティンガヤーザー寺院はティーリピッサヤ村の北はずれ、ミンカバー村からティーリピッサヤ村へと通じる自動車道路の西、イラワジ河寄りの畑の中にある。屋上に四面体のシカーラを載せてはいるが、小型の寺院で内部にはシカーラを支える支柱はない。従って内外両陣の区別もはっきりしない。北向きの入口を入ると奥に仏像を安置した煉瓦造りの台座があるが、仏像自体は崩壊して残っていない。左右の壁面は共に上下十八層、横十七列に仕切られ、各パネルの中に本生図が描き込まれている。その本生図パネル群の中に、大型パネルの釈迦八相図が配置されている。釈迦八相図のパネルは、向って左(東)壁に3枚、右(西)壁に4枚ある。東壁の3枚は左から右に出胎、双神通、三道宝階降下の順、西壁の4枚は入涅槃、酔象調伏、初転法輪、獼猴奉蜜となっている。
