Explanation
城壁で囲まれたオールド・バガンの南、シュエサンドー・パゴダ（No.1568）の西にある東正面の寺院。同一基壇上に3基並んで建っているうち一番北の寺院。円形の堂内の東南隅の壁画。下から2頭のマカラを両足で抱えて乗るキンナラ（男性）、両腕に獅子を抱える怪物の上に乗るキンナリー（女性）、2頭のマカラを両足で抱えて乗る牙を持つ怪物の上に乗る三面のガルダが縦に並ぶ。左右の壁面は千仏図が並ぶ。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.146／薬叉の肩に乗る三面のガルーダ／ペーナター寺院の怪物■一番下にあって口を開けている怪獣は摩迦羅である。その摩迦羅の首を両足で締め上げているのは邪鬼であろう。邪鬼に肩車してもらっているのは三面の迦楼羅ではないかと思われる。顔を三つ持っているのは梵天の特徴だが、背中に翼が生えている上、口も嘴になっているところからみると梵天ではあり得ない。緊那羅の可能性もあるが、足が鳥の脚になっていない点からみると緊那羅でもない。いずれにせよこれらの怪物は、仏教の守護神としての性格を与えられていると思われる。
