『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.200／アンペラ作りの高床式家屋／コンバウン時代の建造物■マハームニ寺院の壁画である。イラワジ河左岸のアマラプーラ町とはタウンダマン湖を隔てた約6キロ南の対岸にある。パガン王(1846~53)の建立になる壮大な寺院で、壁画は東西南北に突き出た向拝の左右壁面と天井とに描かれている。画題は、ほかの寺院、殊にパガン時代のものとはまったく異なり、仏伝や本生譚ではなく、パガン王が国内各地に建立した仏塔寺院を模写したものである。画は、斜め上方からの俯瞰図のように、遠近を壁面の上下で表現したスケールの大きなものである。画風は繊細優雅で、写実性に富んでいる。天井の画は仏足跡と星宿図であるが、壁面にはその中心に描かれた仏塔の内外に様々な仕事に従事する人間群像がみられる。写真は一般市民の住宅。高床で割り竹を網代組みに編んだ壁や屋根(但し、切妻)は僧院の場合と同じである。こうした建築様式は年間雨量の少ない上ビルマ(マンダレーおよびその近辺)に発達したもので、雨量の多い下ビルマ(ラングーンおよびその周辺)とは当然異なる。
