Birth of the Buddha in Lumbinī forest/ (Shwe Gutha temple)
Explanation
Birth of the Buddha in Lumbinī forest/ (Shwe Gutha temple)
The depiction of this scene in this monument is unusual: firstly because the four sakkas are not pouring water on the newborn baby, as usual, but on his mother and on her sister. Secondly, because two court ladies and a man are coming with offerings, a fan and an umbrella, while usually the newly born Buddha is immediately carried from the Lumbinī forest to the royal palace to meet his father. The fashion is Konbaung but that of the hairstyle is Nyaungyan. (CMG)
