Explanation
城壁で囲まれたオールド・バガンの南東、シュエサンドー・パゴダ（No.1568）へと延びる道の途中にある。北を正面とする寺院の主室南壁の全景、塑像の触地印仏坐像を中心として南壁全体に壁画が描かれている。仏頭の背後には菩提樹、その上部には向かって左側に進撃する悪魔マーラの軍勢、右側に退散する同軍勢、左側上部から酔象調伏図、初転法輪図、獼猴奉蜜図、右側上部から従三十三天降下図、舎衛城神変図、出胎図が確認できる。左右の6図と、本尊の降魔成道図、最上部に描かれていたであろう般涅槃図と合わせて、釈迦八相図を成している。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.4／ローカテイパン寺院の内観と釈尊像／ローカテイパン寺院の内観と釈尊像■ローカテイパンはタッピンニュ寺院の南東約600m、シュエサンドー仏塔の北約200mの地点にある北向きの中型寺院である。13世紀前半の建立とみられている。内部は前室と奥室(祠堂)とに分れ、祠堂奥には左手を与願の印、右手は触地印に結んだ釈尊の降魔成道像が祀られている。写真は蓮華座の上に結跏趺坐するこの釈尊塑像とその背面の壁画とを示す。釈尊像背面の壁画は、両脇の出家姿が仏弟子の舎利弗と目?連、両肩の左右が緊那羅で、半円形の後光の外側は左右共釈迦八相図を表す。八相図は、向って右側が上から下に三道宝階降下、双神通、出胎の順、左側は酔象調伏、初転法輪、獼猴奉蜜の順となっている。後光上部の左右に見える群像は魔羅の来襲と退散とを示す。その上には釈尊の入涅槃図が描かれていたが、惜しい事に1974年７月の地震で剥落した。
