Explanation
Between two decorative bands depicting sakkas praying and vegetal motifs, the Buddha is receiving honey cakes from two merchant brothers, Tapussa and Bhalikka, who will become his first two lay disciples. The scene occured during the last of the seven weeks after the Awakening. The murals of monuments nos. 2003, 2007, 2121 and 2162 in Pagan represent a radical change in the iconography, technique and style following Siamese innovations. (CMG)
