『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.199／チーク材とアンペラを用いた高床式の僧房／コンバウン時代の建造物■チャウトーヂー寺院の壁画である。イラワジ河左岸のアマラプーラ町とはタウンダマン湖を隔てた約6キロ南の対岸にある。パガン王(1846~53)の建立になる壮大な寺院で、壁画は東西南北に突き出た向拝の左右壁面と天井とに描かれている。画題は、ほかの寺院、殊にパガン時代のものとはまったく異なり、仏伝や本生譚ではなく、パガン王が国内各地に建立した仏塔寺院を模写したものである。画は、斜め上方からの俯瞰図のように、遠近を壁面の上下で表現したスケールの大きなものである。画風は繊細優雅で、写実性に富んでいる。天井の画は仏足跡と星宿図であるが、壁面にはその中心に描かれた仏塔の内外に様々な仕事に従事する人間群像がみられる。写真はマハーウィザヤヤンディー仏塔の境内に建てられた僧院の図。チーク材の柱を使った高床式の建物で、壁は割り竹を網代組みに編んだ竹壁、屋根もそうである。戸や窓の釣蔀も目を引く。
