『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.9／四臂の菩薩／アベーヤダナー寺院の四臂の菩薩■この寺院は11世紀の後半チャンシッター王によって建立された基壇一層の寺院で、ミンカバー村の南､ナガヨン寺院の北西およそ90mの地点にある。北向きの入口を入ると内部は前室と奥室の二室に分れ、奥室には屋上のシカーラを支えるコの字型の柱がある。そしてこの柱と外壁との間にロの字型の回廊が形成されている。回廊の内外両壁面には大乗系の菩薩像や円内に描かれたヒンズー神の姿が見られる。これを部分別に見てみると、回廊の内壁は、上から下に向って一層目と三層目が舎利塔と多羅樹とを交互に描いたもの、二層目と四層目とは触地印仏坐像と説法印仏坐像とを交互に描いたもの、五層目は花弁文様、六層目は仏弟子を伴った仏陀坐像、七層目は出家、在家信者、梵天などの合掌群像である。回廊内壁には、外壁同様、龕が設けられているが龕と龕との中間壁面には円内に描き込まれたヒンズー神像が18体見られる。一方、回廊外壁の画は、最上層が蓮華座上の転法輪坐像、その下の層が手に剣や槍などの武器を持った菩薩立像、その次が洞窟内の行者や仏陀の姿、その下が片手で蓮の茎を持ち蓮華座の上で倚坐姿をとる菩薩。更にその下が剣や槍、法輪などを手に持つ菩薩坐像となっている。写真は回廊内壁の龕と龕との間に描かれた四臂の菩薩像。菩薩は円味のある女性的な顔容をしているが、眼は一重で目尻がやや釣り上がっており、細長い釣り上がり気味の眉毛とあいまって眼光が鋭く感じられる。頭上には冠を戴き、頭髪を編み上げにしている(ジャター･ムクタとよばれ、ヒンズー系の女神によく見られる髪型)。両耳には巨大な耳飾りを下げ、亀甲(六角)連続文の衣装をまとっている。4本の手の内の2本は花の茎を持ち、下の2本は胸の前で合わせて合掌印を結んでいる。
