Explanation
バガンの内陸部、ミンナントゥー村の北側、タンブーラ寺院（No.482）の道を挟んで反対側にある東正面の寺院。東天井の壁画。天井は四分割されており、一つは仏塔、あとの三つには楼閣内で両脇に弟子を従えた触地印仏坐像が描かれている。本図は、恐らく過去四仏のうちの一尊を描いたものと思われる。周囲には飛天が舞い、植物文様で埋め尽くされている。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.20／成道姿の過去仏／右手触地印、左手与願印の成道坐像■タッカレー寺院の天井に描かれている3体の仏像のひとつである。タッカレー寺院は、ミンナントゥー村から北に向ってソーフラウン、ミンワイン、タヨウピェーと続く牛車道の東側、レーミェンナー、パヤートンズー、タンブーラと続く牛車道の西側にある。壁画は天井を四等分した区画の中に描かれている。その内のひとつには舎利塔が描かれているが、他の三区画はいずれも同じ構図の画で、多重の屋根をもつ建物の内部に結跏趺坐して右手触地印、左手与願印に結んだ仏陀の姿とその両脇に仏陀の方を向いて跪き合掌している仏弟子2人の姿とが描かれている。天井の四面が何を表しているのかという事については幾つかの解釈が可能だが、その内のひとつに過去四仏の世界を表すという考え方がある。その典型的な例がペーナター寺院である。そこの天井面も他の寺院の場合と同じように四面に等分されている。残念な事にかなり大きな?離部分があるので四面全体がかつてそうであったとは断定できないものの、残っている面の画柄から判断すると四面とも同一構図であった可能性が強い。すなわち残っている面の構図は、いずれも、多重の屋根をも建物の中に説法印を結んで結跏趺坐する仏陀像と両横からその仏陀に向って合掌する4人の出家､仏陀の下(前面)に跪いて合掌する在家信者の群、仏陀を取り囲むような形で結跏趺坐している四天王と梵天などで成り立っている。しかも中央の仏陀坐像は釈迦牟尼仏ではなく、その下に記されているビルマ語の墨文によると1体は拘那含牟尼仏であり、1体は迦葉仏である。この事実は残りの2体が拘留孫仏と釈迦牟尼仏である事を示唆している。タッカレー寺院の場合はペーナター寺院の場合とは印契が違うし(転法輪像ではなく成道像)、墨文の説明もないので、勝手な憶測は慎まなければならないが、同じ構図の3体の仏陀は拘留孫、拘那含牟尼、迦葉を表し、残りの舎利塔の画は入滅した釈尊を示しているのではないかと考えられる。もしそうであるとすれば、北面が拘留孫仏、東南が拘那含牟尼仏、南面が迦葉仏、そして西面は釈迦牟尼仏という事になろう。過去四仏と四方との組合せには、アーナンダ寺院の塑像の例があるので、壁画もそれと同じ配列をしているものと解釈される。
