『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.190／ジャータカ第539話マハージャナカ本生／ポーカラー寺院の本生図■マンダレー市からメイミョに通じる自動車道路を20キロばかり行くと、南側に入る赤土の道がある。ここを更に5キロ程行くと､道の行き当りに白色のシュエザヤン仏塔が姿を現す。その仏塔の裏手(南西方向)約50メートル離れた所に小型の寺院がある。それがポーカラー寺院である。寺院入口の直ぐ傍に立てられたシュエザヤン仏塔の縁起を記した石碑によると、この寺院は1856年に建立されたと考えられる。寺院は南、北東の三方に入口をもち、西が祠堂となっている。祠堂には成道坐像が祀られている。壁画は祠堂東に隣接する前室の四方壁面と南北東の向拝壁面とに描かれている。前室の壁面はかなり剥落しているが、東向拝左右壁面の面はまだきわめて鮮明である。画題は、各画の下に記されているビルマ語の墨文によると、大半がマハーニパータである。これを部分別にみると、東向拝が両壁面とも第542話カンダハーラ司祭官本生､北向拝は左壁面が第538話?躄本生、右壁面は第539話マハージャナカ本生、南向拝は左壁面が第546話大隧道本生、右壁面は第547話毘輸安咀?本生となっている。前室(外陣)内部の壁面は、東壁が第541話尼弥王本生と第543話槃達龍本生、南壁は第544話大那羅陀迦葉梵天本生と第547話、北壁は第538話と第549話である。写真はジャータカ第539話マハージャナカ本生の一場面で、アリッタ王が弟ポーラジャナカを謀叛の疑いで監禁したが、ポーラジャナカの誓いで釈放するところを示す。
