『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.2／ゴードパリン寺院から見たパガンの展望／ゴードパリン寺院の屋上から見たパガン遺跡の遠景■ゴードパリン寺院は、パガン城壁内の南西隅、イラワジ河の岸近くにある。13世紀の前半ナラパティシードゥー王によって建立された大型の寺院で、尖塔の高さは地上から約55mもある。写真はこの寺院の屋上から南東方向を撮影したもの。眼前左下にある白色のヤンダナーミンズー寺院やその先にある白一色のシュエサンドー仏塔、右前方に小さく見える白色のミャゼーディー仏塔など、白く塗られた仏塔寺院は今日でも篤信の信者による維持補修が行われているが、赤茶けた寺院の大半は七、八百年の歳月を経た今日次第に風化の一途を辿りつつある。中には完全に崩壊して瓦礫の山と化してしまった仏塔寺院も少なくない。写真右眼の前にある崩れかけた寺院はチャーラパッ、道を隔ててその前方にある中型の寺院はミーニェインゴン、その右隣はヌワピャ、ミーニェインゴンの左前方にあるやや大きな寺院はミンピャの各寺院である。一方、左の方、ヤンダナーミンズー寺院とは道を隔ててその前方にある玉垣付きの建造物は周囲の壁が全部塗り込められていて内部へは入れないがミーマラウン寺院とよばれている。ビルマ語で俗に｢フレー・ウィンヨーダン・タニャンニャン;パガン・パヤー・パウン」(牛車の車軸の音ギシギシ,パガンの仏塔寺院の数)と言われる程多い大小様々な仏塔寺院が、見渡す限りの遙か彼方まで点在している。深閑と静まり返った昼下がりの一刻、屋上に佇むと人気のない遺跡がかつての栄枯盛衰を静かに語りかけてくれるような感じがする。
