比丘礼拝図／仏塔（チャンスィッター窟（No.65））
Explanation
バガンの東部、シュエズィーゴン・パゴダ（No.1）の南参道の入り口の西側にある北正面の洞窟寺院。入り口は地上にあるが、地下に空間を作り、通路と房室を設け、壁画が描かれている。本図は中央の礼拝堂上部の壁画。比丘が仏塔を礼拝しているように見えるが、壁画全体としては、体を向けている先の壁面に描かれた宝冠を戴いた天人像もしくは菩薩像に対して礼拝している様子を描いている。この宝冠坐像は、兜率天上の菩薩か、弥勒菩薩かもしれない。また各仏塔の上部には樹木が描かれ、これらは過去仏を表すのかもしれない。バガン遺跡の他の壁画と比べると、描写が若干稚拙に見え、少し異質な壁画である。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.90／舎利塔に向って合掌礼拝する比丘／チャンシッター窟院の出家像■舎利塔に向って合掌する出家の姿であるが､面白い事にこれらの出家は左肩を露出するような袈裟の着方をしている。袈裟のまとい方には、両肩共すっぽり覆ってしまう｢通肩｣と右肩を露わにする「偏袒右肩｣とがあるが、この画のように偏袒左肩に描いたのは、舎利塔が向って左側、出家が右側に跪いている(従って出家の左半身が手前になっている)関係からやむを得ずそうしたものと解釈される。因みに出家が左側、舎利塔がその右側に描かれている時(当然、右半身が手前になる)の出家の袈裟は偏袒右肩になっている。
