Explanation
城壁で囲まれたオールド・バガンの南、ミィンカバー村の北にある東向きの寺院。主室の東回廊内壁南側の壁画。内陣への入り口の左右に、2体1対で立っている14臂の護法神。観音であれば阿弥陀の化仏、弥勒であれば仏塔がシンボルとなるが、特定の菩薩を示す特徴は見出せず、護法神と考えられる。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.16／王冠をつけた菩薩／ミンカバー・クービャウチー寺院の菩薩像■細長い眉毛、目尻の釣り上がった一重瞼の眼、眉間の楔型印、受口の唇、円味のある顔など、肉体的な特徴はアベーヤダナー寺院の菩薩と変りがない。周辺に変形菱形の突起を幾つも付けた冠、大きな丸い耳飾り、三重になった首飾りなど装身具の面でも同じである。左手に持っているのは法輪であろうか。17 18 ナンダミンニャ寺院明り窓横の守護神前者は南窓の左、後者は北窓の右に描かれている。共に鋸歯状の突起が付いた冠を頭に戴き、髪を塔状に高く編み上げ、幅広の首飾り、腕飾り、足飾りなどの装身具を身に付け、腰回りを覆う半ズボン状の腰布と脛の中程迄達する透薄の下衣をまとっている。前者は足元の壁が大きく欠け落ちているので分らないが、後者は邪鬼(キールティムカ)に乗っている。菩薩である事は明らかだが、武器は持っていない。共に植物(蓮)の茎を手にしているところから考えると蓮華手菩薩である可能性が考えられる。他の寺院の菩薩と違う点は、耳朶は釈尊像のように長いが耳飾りを付けていない事である。共に立像ではあるが、直立しているのではなく腰を右または左にいくらかひねっている。こうした立ち方はアベーヤダナー寺院の菩薩の場合も同じである。なお、片手は胸の前に挙げ指を伸して掌を外向けにしている。施無畏の印を結んでいるものと思われる。
