男女並立図（パヤートンズー（No.477-9））
Explanation
バガンの内陸部、ミンナントゥー村の北側にあるパヤートンズー寺院の中央祠堂（No.478）主室南東隅の南側上部の壁画。寺院は北を正面とし、同型の祠堂が3基連なっている。柱装飾の中が枠で4つに仕切られており、上から2番目の枠内に描かれている男女像。恐らく、向かって左が男性、右が女性。女性が何か持っているが、これが楽器なのか、竪琴なのかは判然としない。男性は三屈法トリバンガの姿勢をとった菩薩のようにもみえる。右端には象の上に後ろ足で立つ怪獣ヴィヤーラもみえる。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.156／密教系の菩薩と竪琴を演じる弁天／パヤートンズー寺院の壁面隅に描かれている大乗系の菩薩像■向って左側の菩薩は宝冠を被り、膝を曲げて右足を浮かせ、上半身をやや右に傾け、顔をかすかに左に傾けて三曲法(トリバンガ)に描かれている。その左側に立つ妃(シャクティ)は菩薩にくらべると幾分小柄だが､他の寺院の妃程極端に小さいという事はない。額帯の形からみて女性である事は明らかだが、乳房の丸味は描かれていない。竪琴を演奏している姿は他の寺院でも見られない事はないが、大抵の場合演奏者は天人で、菩薩の妃が竪琴を演奏している図はきわめて珍しい。ビルマの伝統的楽器のひとつである竪琴がパガン時代から既に使われていた事がこの画から分り、音楽史の上からも重要な画のひとつとなっている。
