『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.40／魔羅の退散／魔羅の来襲と退散■魔羅の描き方は寺院によってかならずしも同じではないが、共通するのは、ぎょろりとしたどんぐり眼、肉厚の大きな鼻、唇の両端から覗いている牙、もじゃもじゃした髭面、二臂または四臂あるいは六臂の太い腕、手にもつ剣や楯その他の武器などである。また、来襲場面にしろ退散場面にしろ、何らかの動物の背にまたがっている。動物は、寺院によって、 虎であったり、獅子であったり、牛であったりする。
