Explanation
バガンの南部、宿泊施設や飲食店などが並ぶニューバガンの少し北にある東正面の寺院。北突出部北壁東側の壁画。中央に大きく従三十三天降下図があり、本図はその右（東）側に縦に4つ区画が並んでいるうちの下から2つ目に位置する。本図の上部は舎衛城神変図、下部は菩提樹の観察図。釈迦は倚坐で右を向き、猿が献じる蜜を受け取っている。本図は獼猴奉蜜図と呼ばれ、釈迦八相図のひとつ。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.31／獼猴奉蜜／獼猴奉蜜図■449号寺院の壁面に描かれている。この寺院は、ティンガヤーザー寺院群の北、セインニェッ・アマ寺院の南西、イラワジ河近くの丘の上にある。四面体のシカーラを載せているが､小型の寺院で内部にはシカーラを支える支柱がなく、中間壁を欠くため内外両陣の区別もはっきりしない。奥の釈尊塑像は崩壊していて残っていない。壁画は、入口を入って直ぐ左右(南北)両壁面とその奥の南北両壁面とに描かれている。手前の壁面は縦十六層、横十七列に区切られ、各パネルの中に本生図が描かれている。奥の壁面は釈迦八相図で、南壁が精舎内のジャンブパティ宝冠仏を中心とする仏舎利分骨(左中)、初転法輪(右下)など、北壁は三道宝階降下を中心とする出胎(左中)、双神通(右上)などとなっている。写真の獼猴奉蜜図は双神通図の真下にあるもので、袈裟を偏袒左肩(右肩ではない)にまとった釈尊が蜜の入った鉢を猿から受け取ったところが表されている。鉢を捧げた猿は釈尊に向って合掌している。
