Explanation
城壁で囲まれたオールド・バガンの東側、ティーローミンロー（No.1812）の西側にある、5基の同型の寺院群からなるパヤーンガーズー・グループにある1846号寺院の壁画。西を正面とする寺院の北突出部東壁にある。舎衛城神変の中でも千仏化現と呼ばれる場面。中央の転法輪印仏坐像に背を向けて化現された仏陀を描くのは、東インドのパーラ朝で定型化されたスタイル。下部左側に礼拝する王族は、恐らくビンビサーラ王を表し、右側に敗北した外道が描かれている。本図の下にも長方形の枠があり、仏伝と思われる仏立像が描かれている。(JT)

『パガンの仏教壁画』pl.28／双神通／パヤーンガーズー寺院の双神通図■パヤーンガーズー寺院というのは、ニャウンウーからパガンへと通じる自動車道路をウパーリ戒壇の手前で東側に入る小道に沿って約300mばかり行った畑の中に北を向いてコの字型に隣り合って建ち並ぶ五基の寺院を指す。これらの寺院は、パヤートンズー寺院のように内部が相互に繋がっているわけではなく、互いに独立した別々の寺院である。従って正確には「パヤーンガーズー寺院群」と称すべきであろう。寺院の番号は、北側の二基の内、西の寺院が1140、東の方は1143、南側に三基並ぶ寺院は西から東に順番に1142、1141、1144となっている。この内壁画は1143号寺院のものが最も鮮明で豊富、次いで1141、1144号の順となっている。釈迦八相図が見られるのは1143号寺院で、明り窓の横の縦長パネルの中に描かれている。なおパヤーンガーズー寺院群は、寺院の四隅にヒンズー教の神々の像が描かれている事でも知られる。写真は共に同じ構図を示している。すなわち説法印を結んだ釈尊坐像を中心に、その上下左右に2体または4体の化身(ニルマーナブッダ)が描かれ、蓮華座の下には王冠を被った王および従者と両手を挙げて飛せんとする行者の姿が描かれている。舎衛城門近くのマンゴーの木の下で展開された釈尊の二大奇跡を表したもので、蓮華下の王は?薩羅国王の波斯匿王、行者は釈尊に挑戦した裸形行者である。
