『チベット密教壁画』スピトクpl.9／護法尊ダムチャン／ダムチャン(Damcan)とは「誓いを持つ者」という意味であるが、起源はボン教の神であった。ところが、チベット密教の事実上の開祖パドマサンバヴァ(Padmasambhava、蓮華生)がチベットに入った時に、彼によって調伏され、むしろ仏教の護法尊となったのである。とくに悪霊降伏に霊験があると信じられ、一般の尊崇を集めている。ダムチャンにも二つの区別があり、一尊で描かれる場合(狭義のダムチャン)と五尊として描かれる場合(広義のダムチャン、五王子ともいう)がある。前者は一面三眼二臂で、右手に金剛杵､左手にカパーラを持つ。後者の場合は、それぞれ五色に分かれ、五つの乗物に乗るが､とくに最初のもの(Pehar、もしくはPedkarと呼ばれる)は白色三面六臂で各手に武器を持つ。いずれの場合も、縁の広い帽子をかぶり、白獅子にまたがることは共通している。同図の場合は後者の例にあたり、広い意味でのダムチャンと言ってよかろう。やはり忿怒尊の通例として火炎光背をバックに、仏敵者を踏みつけている。
