『チベット密教壁画』フィアンpl.3／六臂マハーカーラ／勤行堂前壁左部。マハーカーラとは、直訳すれば｢大黒｣であるが、日本の大黒天とは余り似ていない。それは、日本の場合、発音の関係で大国主命と混同してしまい、インド古来の忿怒尊の姿を失ったからである(密教系の尊像の中にはその面影を忠実に残しているものもあるが)。マハーカーラにはいくつかの形式があるが、最もポピュラーなものが同図の六臂尊(Mgonpophyagdrug)である。六臂の場合の持物は、通常、右手が曲刀、念珠、ダマル鼓(髑髏を二つ背を向け合せた鼓)、左手がカパーラ(髑髏杯)、羂索、三戟である。足下に踏まれる象面の者はインド教の神ガネーシャ(Gane-sa)もしくはヴィナーヤカ(Vin?yaka)と伝えられている。マハーカーラは一般に諸尊堂(ハカン)の入口に描かれることが多いが、中でもツォンカパの開いたゲールック派で尊崇されている。
